Knitting: The Sock/Leg Warmer/Stocking

This is my "sock". I kind of messed up at the begginning of the rows. I saw a video that said you slip one and then knit one, for one row, and then the next row you slip one and then purl across to the end of the row. So once I realized that, this is what I have been doing.
I'm just not sure now, how much further I should go with this. Maybe another inch? I'm not sure. And also, does anybody know, this part, what is it called? Turning the heel, or is turning the heel after you have finished making this as long as you want it?

I think you're just working the heel, but I'm not positive. The "turning" the heel part is when you reach the point where you make the heel transition to the foot. Good luck! You're really making progress!

Thank you. I thought that's what it meant but I wasn't sure. I know I have heard another word called "gusset", but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with sock making, but I can't be too sure.

Anyway, thanks for the help and of course, the encouragement.

You know something, I have been knitting socks for a while but just started back to it recently. Once I learned how, I really just forgot all the technical terms for what I was doing. I think that when you get past the heel flap, then comes the heel turn. That is what makes the V in the heel. I think?

I have been knitting ankle socks since I need to have my socks on my feet quicker. I do miss the long leg version with a nice pattern on it.

Thank You! I guess when I get to when I am finished with this part, I'm going to start "turning the heel".

It kind of makes sense though. When I think of an actual heel you have to turn on it, since your heel is like a right angle. Thanks again!
