Knitting: Second Knit Hat = First Tam

1960's or 1970's?
Cute

So here's what I started out with....
Not too bad, I suppose.

So I scrapped the knit hat. I'm not sure why. I guess I wanted to try something different and also, I had some parts in the hat where I think I accidentally lost a stitch. So I found this knit and crochet booklet a friend gave me a long time ago, maybe it was earlier this year when she gave it to me. She told me it was something her grandmother had.

Anyway, I saw this tam and wanted to try it. Here are some of the directions:

(1) Cast on 99 sts and work in K1, P1 ribbing for 7 rows.
(2) Next row: P across for hem
(3) Next 7 rows: Starting with a P row work in stockinette st (P1 row, K1 row)
(4) 16th row: K5, inc in next st (to inc: K in front, K in back, K in front), *K 10, inc in next st, repeat from * across ending K5.

Here's the bad part though. I messed up on the 4th step. The "*" kind of messed me up. I didn't know what it meant, until somebody told me that it means you have to repeat the previous step or maybe it was repeat the following step. I can't remember. But anyway, I think I messed up on this part.

The good news is that there is going to be a knitting gathering at my library soon, and I'm hoping this time somebody can really help me.
